Architrave

Architrave is the trim fitted around a door or window opening to cover and finish the junction between frame and wall.

Architrave frames the opening and usually works visually with the skirting and door style. The term can also have a broader architectural meaning, but in interior joinery it commonly means the moulding around a frame.

In an Edinburgh period property, original architraves may have distinctive widths, profiles and corner blocks. A replacement that is merely similar can make a doorway look out of step with the rest of the room.

Before changing an opening or installing fitted cabinetry nearby, record how the existing trim projects and meets the skirting. Matching the profile and junctions helps new work sit comfortably alongside original joinery.
