Georgian Townhouse

A Georgian townhouse is a multi-storey urban house dating principally from the Georgian period, typically characterised by symmetrical proportions, stone construction and refined classical detailing.

Georgian townhouses are an important part of Edinburgh’s architectural character, particularly within the New Town and surrounding central neighbourhoods. They were generally built as substantial multi-storey homes with carefully proportioned rooms and restrained classical façades.

Typical features can include sash and case windows, decorative cornicing, ceiling roses, fireplaces, panelled doors, timber shutters and original timber flooring. Many have subsequently been subdivided into flats, while others remain as complete houses.

Renovating a Georgian townhouse often involves balancing modern requirements with the retention and repair of original architectural features. Listed building status and conservation requirements may also be relevant depending on the individual property.
