Load-Bearing Wall Removal Edinburgh | New Town Townhouse

Work is progressing at our New Town townhouse renovation in Edinburgh, where we're removing a load-bearing masonry wall to connect the front room with the kitchen at the rear of the property.

Following the initial site preparation and floor strip-out, attention has now turned to the structural alterations.

Temporary Supports and Brickwork Removal

Temporary structural supports have been installed to support the relevant structure while work on the existing masonry wall takes place.

With the supports in position, we've begun carefully removing the brickwork to form the new opening between the two rooms.

This is an important stage of the project, and one where the proposed transformation is beginning to become visible.

Opening Up the Living Space

As the brickwork comes away, we can now see through from one room into the other, giving a much clearer sense of how the finished layout will feel.

The aim is to create a more open connection between the front living room and rear kitchen, allowing natural light to move more freely through the townhouse while retaining the character of the original property.

Structural alterations in Edinburgh's traditional buildings require careful consideration of the existing construction and surrounding architectural details.

Our team undertakes load-bearing wall removals and structural alterations as part of managed residential renovation projects across Edinburgh.

We'll continue documenting the progress as the opening takes shape.

New Town Townhouse Renovation: Strip-Out & Site Preparation

We're starting a new renovation project in a traditional townhouse in Edinburgh's New Town, where our clients have engaged us to carry out structural alterations to create a more connected living space.

The main element of the project involves removing a load-bearing wall between the front room and rear kitchen. Opening up these two rooms will allow more natural light to travel through the property and create a better connection between the living and kitchen areas.

As with any renovation of a traditional Edinburgh townhouse, we're approaching the work sensitively, taking care to respect the property's existing architectural character and period features.

Preparing the Property

Our first stage has been to strip out the existing flooring in preparation for a new herringbone floor, which will be laid as the renovation progresses.

We've also installed protective dust screening to help contain construction dust and prevent it spreading into other areas of the property while the structural work is undertaken.

These early preparations are an important part of managing a renovation in an occupied or partially occupied property, helping protect surrounding rooms and finishes throughout the building process.

What's Next?

With the initial strip-out and site protection underway, the next stage will focus on the structural wall removal and creating the opening between the two rooms.
