Structural Alteration

Structural alterations change part of a building’s load-bearing structure rather than simply its finishes or internal decoration. Common examples include removing load-bearing walls, creating larger openings between rooms, installing structural beams and making alterations to floors or roof structures.

They are particularly relevant during Edinburgh property renovations where existing layouts are being adapted for modern living. Opening a kitchen into an adjoining dining or living space, for example, may involve considerably more than removing a partition if the wall forms part of the building’s structure. The proposed alteration may need to be assessed by a structural engineer, with structural drawings and calculations used to determine how loads will be supported once the existing structure is changed.
