Structural Calculations

Structural calculations are the engineering checks used to demonstrate that proposed structural elements can safely resist the loads and forces acting on them.

Calculations can determine the required size and capacity of beams, joists, columns, foundations, connections and other structural components. They also record the assumptions and design standards used.

For an Edinburgh alteration, calculations commonly accompany drawings for a new opening, extension, roof change or loft conversion. They may be reviewed as part of a building warrant application.

Calculations are specific to the design, materials, spans, loads and support conditions assessed. A beam size taken from another project is not a substitute for project-specific engineering.
