Structural Engineer

A structural engineer is a qualified engineering professional who assesses and designs the parts of a building that carry loads and provide stability.

Their work may cover foundations, walls, floors, roofs, beams, columns and connections. They determine how existing and proposed structures transfer loads safely to the ground.

For an Edinburgh renovation, a structural engineer may be required for a wall removal, new opening, loft conversion, extension or investigation of cracking and movement. Their design informs both the drawings and the construction work.

The engineer’s role is distinct from that of the architect, surveyor and contractor, although the disciplines need to coordinate. Structural advice should be obtained before work alters a potentially loadbearing element.
