Traditional Cottage

A traditional cottage is a small, generally low-rise house of traditional construction, often built from stone and characterised by a relatively simple original layout.

Traditional cottages are found in a number of Edinburgh neighbourhoods and former villages that were gradually incorporated into the expanding city.

Their layouts and construction can differ considerably from Edinburgh tenements and townhouses. Typical characteristics may include stone walls, pitched roofs, fireplaces, timber floors and relatively compact rooms.

Cottage renovation can involve opening up internal spaces, upgrading kitchens and bathrooms, improving insulation and services, carrying out structural alterations or extending the property where appropriate.
