Walls plaster

Damp-Proof Course (DPC)

A damp-proof course, or DPC, is a barrier or layer near the base of a wall intended to limit moisture rising through masonry from the ground.

A DPC may be built into a wall or introduced as part of later work. Its form and position depend on the age and construction of the building. Some traditional stone walls have no modern-style DPC.

In Edinburgh period properties, low-level staining should not automatically be attributed to a missing or failed DPC. Rainwater defects, high external ground levels, plumbing leaks, salts and condensation can produce overlapping symptoms.

Before specifying an injected course or new internal finish, investigate the source of moisture and how the wall was originally intended to dry. A treatment chosen from a photograph or a single meter reading may miss the real cause.
