Floors

Floorboards

Floorboards are boards laid across floor joists or a supporting base to form a usable floor surface or the layer beneath another finish.

Traditional floorboards are often solid timber laid across joists. They can be exposed and finished or covered by carpet or another flooring material.

Edinburgh tenements and townhouses may retain original boards with signs of old repairs, pipe runs and varying widths. Before sanding or replacing them, check their thickness, fixings and the condition of the joists beneath.

Loose or uneven boards may need careful refixing or selective repair. Where sound separation between flats matters, the floor’s whole build-up should be considered rather than treating the boards in isolation.
