Edinburgh contains a substantial number of listed buildings, ranging from Georgian townhouses and tenements to villas, commercial buildings and other historically significant structures.
Listed status does not prevent a building from being renovated, but it can affect what alterations are appropriate and what permissions are required. Original windows, doors, plasterwork, fireplaces, stonework, internal layouts and other elements may contribute to the building’s special character.
Renovation therefore requires greater consideration of the existing historic fabric and the impact proposed alterations may have upon it.
