Partition Wall

A partition wall divides one internal space from another. It may be built from studs, masonry or another system, and its structural role must be checked before alteration.

A partition wall describes what a wall does in the room layout; it does not by itself describe what the wall is made from or whether it carries weight. Some partitions are lightweight studwork, while older buildings can contain solid masonry internal walls.

In Edinburgh renovations, a proposed kitchen opening or changed flat layout may involve a wall that looks like a partition but carries joists, masonry or a wall above. Other partitions may be important for fire separation or sound insulation.

A survey of the wall and surrounding structure establishes what needs to be retained or replaced. A stud partition is one particular construction method for an internal partition wall.
