Skirting Board

A skirting board is the trim fitted along the bottom of an interior wall where it meets the floor.

Skirting protects the lower wall and gives the floor and wall junction a finished edge. Profiles range from simple square-edged boards to deep moulded designs.

Edinburgh Georgian and Victorian rooms often have substantial skirtings whose height and profile help set the scale of the space. Replacing a short section during renovation can look obvious if the profile, thickness or level does not match.

When fitting new skirting, allow for the finished floor height and inspect the wall behind any damaged run. On an older uneven wall, careful scribing and joins usually matter more than forcing the board completely straight.
