Joinery storage

Alcove Storage

Alcove storage is cabinetry or shelving fitted into a recess, often on one or both sides of a chimney breast.

Alcoves can accommodate low cupboards, open shelves, wardrobes or a combination of these. Their dimensions are rarely identical, particularly in older rooms where walls and floors may be out of square.

In Edinburgh flats, using a chimney breast recess can add substantial storage without placing a freestanding unit across the main wall. The joinery should still leave sensible access to any services and account for the condition of the external or chimney wall.

Alcove storage describes the location of the work. A press cupboard is a more specific, often existing or traditionally styled built-in cupboard in a recess.
