Ceiling Rose

A ceiling rose is a decorative feature fitted to a ceiling, commonly around a central light fitting.

A ceiling rose draws attention to the centre of a room and can sit alongside cornicing and other plasterwork. Traditional examples are often formed in plaster; later versions may be made from different materials.

Many Edinburgh period interiors have ceiling roses whose size and detail relate to the room’s height and overall decoration. A small rose in a grand room can look misplaced, while a large one may overwhelm a modest space.

When restoring a room, inspect the existing rose for cracks, previous patching and secure fixing. If a light is being installed, the electrical fitting needs its own suitable support: decorative plaster alone should not be assumed to carry a heavy pendant.
