Chimney Pot

A chimney pot is the terminal, often ceramic or clay, fitted at the top of a chimney flue above the stack.

Pots raise the outlet above the stack and are part of the visible character of many traditional rooflines. Their shape and fit vary with the flue and the fireplace or appliance it serves.

On an Edinburgh period property, a cracked or loose pot should be assessed with the surrounding masonry, flaunching and weathering. A missing pot can also leave a disused flue exposed to rain if no suitable termination is provided.

Changing a pot or adding a cowl should suit the actual flue arrangement. The appearance of the stack alone does not show whether the flue below is usable.
