Chimney Stack

A chimney stack is the masonry or other structure that rises above a roof and contains one or more flues.

The stack takes the flues through and above the roofline. It may include chimney pots, coping, pointing and leadwork where it meets the roof.

Chimney stacks are prominent features of many Edinburgh tenements and townhouses. Exposed masonry, open joints or failed flashing can let rain into the roof or rooms below even when the slates nearby look sound.

Repairs should consider the stability of the stack and its whole weathering detail. A chimney pot is the component at the top of a flue, rather than another name for the stack.
