Coving

Coving is a curved or shaped moulding that softens the junction between an interior wall and ceiling.

Coving provides a continuous transition at the top of a room. It can be plain or profiled and is made from plaster or other materials. The term is often used for simpler profiles, while cornicing can describe more elaborate moulded detail.

In an Edinburgh renovation, a new stretch of coving should align with existing runs and meet corners and chimney breasts cleanly. An off-the-shelf profile may look noticeably different beside original plasterwork.

Cracks at the wall and ceiling junction can return if movement or loose substrate is covered without investigation. Repairing a short run and matching the existing profile may preserve more character than replacing every section.
