Cowl

A chimney cowl is a fitting placed at a flue outlet to serve a specified purpose, such as limiting rain entry or helping manage draught.

Cowls come in different designs and are not interchangeable. Some are intended for a working flue, while others protect an unused opening while allowing it to ventilate.

In an Edinburgh building with several chimney pots, identify which flue each pot serves before fitting anything at roof level. A cowl will not repair a cracked stack, failed flashing or an unsafe flue.

The correct choice depends on the appliance or whether the flue is disused, so the termination should be specified as part of the whole chimney arrangement.
