Dado Rail

A dado rail is a horizontal moulding fixed partway up an interior wall, traditionally dividing the lower wall from the area above.

A dado rail sets a line around a room and often works with wall panelling, wallpaper or a contrasting paint finish. Its height and profile vary with the proportions and period of the interior.

In Edinburgh Georgian and Victorian properties, surviving rails may be part of a wider decorative scheme. An apparently missing stretch can indicate a later doorway, built-in cupboard or wall alteration.

Where sections need replacing, match the existing profile and align the new work through doors, corners and chimney breasts. A picture rail sits higher on the wall and serves a different visual and practical purpose.
