Decorative Plasterwork

Decorative plasterwork is moulded, cast or modelled plaster used to create architectural ornament such as cornices, ceiling roses and friezes.

Decorative plasterwork can frame a ceiling, mark a transition between surfaces or provide a central feature. Its profile, scale and repetition help give a period room its character.

Edinburgh Georgian and Victorian interiors may have surviving cornices, ceiling roses and other ornamental details, sometimes hidden under later finishes or interrupted by alterations. Repairs should start by identifying the original material and shape.

A damaged section can often be repaired or matched rather than removing the entire run. If staining or cracking is present, address the underlying cause before restoring the detail; a neat surface repair will not fix ongoing moisture or movement.
