Fanlight

A fanlight is a glazed opening above a door that brings light into an entrance or adjoining space.

Fanlights sit above external or internal doors and may be rectangular, arched or divided by glazing bars. Their name does not mean every fanlight has a fan-shaped pattern.

Edinburgh Georgian entrances often use fanlights as part of the doorway composition. They bring daylight into halls and stair spaces that might otherwise be dark, and their glazing and frame contribute to the appearance of the frontage.

When repairing an entrance, assess the fanlight frame, glazing, seals and surrounding masonry or joinery together. Changes to a historic doorway should respect the existing proportions and may require checks where the property is protected.
