Fireplace Surround

A fireplace surround is the visible frame around a fireplace opening, often made from stone, marble, cast iron or timber.

The surround frames the opening and helps define the chimney breast as a feature of the room. It may be an original part of the interior or a replacement installed during a later renovation.

Edinburgh properties contain a wide range of fireplace surrounds, from simple tenement examples to more elaborate Georgian and Victorian designs. The mantel, opening, hearth and inner components are separate elements, even when they read visually as one fireplace.

Before removing or altering a surround, inspect how it is fixed and whether the material can be repaired. If a fire or stove is to be used, the opening, flue, hearth and installation need assessment beyond the appearance of the surround.
