Floors

Flagstone Floor

A flagstone floor is a floor made from large, relatively flat pieces of natural stone laid as paving slabs or flags.

Flagstones can give a floor a varied colour and surface that reflect the stone used and its age. They may be historic material or a new installation chosen to suit a room or entrance.

In an Edinburgh older property, surviving stone flooring should be assessed as part of its original construction. Its moisture behaviour, bedding and levels may differ considerably from a modern tiled floor.

Before lifting or sealing flags, check for movement, trapped moisture and the condition of the layers below. A new flagstone floor also needs a suitable base, thresholds and a finish appropriate to the stone.
