Flue

A flue is the passage through which smoke and combustion gases travel from a fire, stove or heating appliance to an outlet.

A chimney stack may contain one flue or several separate flues serving different fireplaces. The visible chimney pot sits at the top of an individual flue, but the pot is not the flue itself.

Edinburgh tenements and townhouses can have disused fireplaces whose flues have been altered, capped or affected by old masonry repairs. An opening that looks intact does not establish that the flue is safe to use.

Before connecting a fire or stove, arrange an appropriate inspection of the flue, ventilation and appliance requirements. Signs of staining or water near a chimney also call for a check of the stack and its weathering.
