Windows doors

Internal Door

An internal door separates rooms or spaces within a building and may provide privacy, sound separation or a defined fire-resisting function.

Internal doors may be hinged, sliding, glazed or panelled. The leaf works together with its frame, hinges and latch, so a replacement must fit the opening and the way the room is used.

Edinburgh flats often retain older panelled doors with distinctive profiles and hardware. Repairing a sticking door or matching a missing one may preserve more character than replacing a whole set with standard leaves.

Before removing or altering a door, check whether it serves a fire or acoustic separation. Its function cannot be judged from appearance alone, especially in a converted flat or shared building.
