Lead Flashing

Lead flashing is a formed strip or sheet of lead used to weatherproof a roof junction, such as the meeting point between slates and a chimney or wall.

Lead can be shaped to the profile of a roof junction. Its laps, joints, fixings and allowance for movement all contribute to its performance.

Historic Edinburgh roofs often use lead at chimneys, valleys and parapets. A leak blamed on slates may instead come from split, lifted or poorly detailed leadwork nearby.

Inspection should consider the whole junction and the condition of the surface into which the lead is dressed. Replacing a visible strip without resolving the adjacent masonry or roof detail may not stop the water.
