Walls plaster

Lime Plaster

Lime plaster is a traditional plaster made with lime as its binder, used on masonry and lath in many older buildings.

Lime plaster is found in a range of traditional wall and ceiling finishes. Its composition and application differ from many modern gypsum plasters, so the right repair depends on the existing substrate and surrounding material.

In Edinburgh stone properties, older walls may have been finished with lime plaster as part of a construction that manages moisture differently from a modern sealed wall. Applying an incompatible dense finish can conceal or worsen an underlying damp problem.

When patching or replastering, assess the masonry, moisture source and surviving layers before choosing a material. Matching the original finish is a practical matter as well as an aesthetic one: the new work must suit the wall behind it.
