Mortice Lock

A mortice lock is a lock fitted into a pocket cut within the edge of a door, with its bolt engaging a strike plate in the frame.

Unlike a surface-mounted lock, most of a mortice lock sits inside the door. The case size, backset, handle arrangement and strike position have to suit the door and frame.

Older Edinburgh doors may already contain mortices from earlier locks. A replacement should be selected carefully so that unnecessary enlargement does not weaken a narrow stile or damage original joinery.

The lock is only one part of door security. Door thickness, hinges, frame fixings and the intended use all matter; the right specification depends on the particular opening.
