Original Fireplace

An original fireplace is a fireplace or surviving fireplace component dating from the building’s earlier design or use, rather than a recent replacement.

An original fireplace may include a surround, cast-iron insert, grate, hearth or several surviving parts from different periods. “Original” should be used carefully: a fireplace can be old and attractive without being original to the room.

In Edinburgh tenements and townhouses, fireplaces are often concealed, removed, blocked up or altered as heating systems change. Discovering an old opening does not establish that its flue is sound or that a fire can safely be used.

A sensitive renovation records and assesses what survives before deciding what to restore. If the aim is a working fireplace, the chimney and appliance arrangement require appropriate specialist inspection.
