Panelled Door

A panelled door is a door built with a surrounding frame and one or more inset panels, commonly in timber.

A panelled door is made from rails and stiles around its panels. The number, shape and proportion of the panels vary, and often help identify the character of the joinery in a property.

In Edinburgh tenements and townhouses, surviving interior doors can be valuable details even when covered by later paint or fitted with replacement hardware. Repairs may involve easing a door, repairing a joint or matching a damaged panel.

Before replacing an old door, consider its fit, condition and role in the room. Where a door forms part of a fire or acoustic separation, its performance and any proposed alteration need to be checked as well as its appearance.
