Parapet

A parapet is a low wall that rises above the level of a roof, terrace or other edge.

Parapets can hide the roof from view or form part of an architectural façade. The top of the wall, its joints and the junction with the roof are all exposed to rain.

Edinburgh stone buildings may have parapets that contribute strongly to the street elevation. Water can enter through failed coping or hidden guttering and show as damp some distance below the actual defect.

When investigating a leak, inspect the complete parapet and drainage arrangement. Repairing only the visible internal stain leaves the weathering route untouched.
