Press Cupboard

A press cupboard is a built-in cupboard, often set into a wall recess or alcove, used for household storage.

In an Edinburgh property, “press” is a familiar term for a cupboard or enclosed storage space, including one built into an alcove. Its doors, shelves and frame may be original or the product of a later alteration.

A surviving press can be part of the room’s joinery rather than merely an empty niche. Before replacing it, check whether its doors and fittings can be repaired and how the cupboard relates to the skirting, cornice and fireplace wall.

New press cupboards can be made to match the proportions of a period room while providing practical shelves and concealed storage. Alcove storage is the broader term for work fitted into the recess, whether open or enclosed.
