Roofing

Roof Void

A roof void is the space beneath a roof covering and above the ceiling or upper occupied rooms, sometimes called a loft space.

A roof void may contain rafters, insulation, services and ventilation openings. Its shape and accessibility depend on the roof structure and whether part of the space has been converted into rooms.

In Edinburgh tenements and older houses, examining the void can help identify a leak, inspect timbers or understand how an attic conversion might affect the existing roof. Staining near a chimney or valley may be visible there before it shows through the ceiling below.

Insulation and ventilation need to work as a whole. Blocking airflow or concealing damp timber during a refurbishment can create problems that are difficult to see from the finished room.
