Roofing

Scots Slate

Scots slate is natural roofing slate historically quarried in Scotland and used on traditional Scottish roofs.

Scottish slate can have varied sizes, thicknesses and surface character. Traditional roofs may be laid in diminishing courses, with larger slates lower down and smaller ones toward the ridge, although the exact pattern depends on the roof.

In Edinburgh, retaining sound existing Scots slate and matching repair pieces can help keep the character of a historic roof. Its use should be confirmed from the roof itself rather than assumed simply because the building is old.

Repairs also depend on the fixings, roof substrate, flashings and weathering details. Replacing individual slipped slates will not resolve a failed valley or underlying structural problem.
