Walls plaster

Skim Coat

A skim coat is a thin finishing layer of plaster applied over a suitable prepared surface to create a smooth result ready for decoration.

Skimming is often used on plasterboard or sound existing plaster. Because the coat is thin, it follows the surface beneath it rather than correcting major unevenness or instability.

In an Edinburgh flat renovation, skimming can freshen walls after alterations or provide a consistent finish across new and old sections. Preparation matters: loose paint, movement cracks, damp or failing plaster can show through or cause the new finish to fail.

If a wall needs significant levelling or rebuilding, a skim coat is only the final stage of a larger plastering job. The substrate and any original features should be assessed before the finishing method is chosen.
