Roofing

Slate Roof

A slate roof is a roof covered with overlapping natural slate pieces fixed to a supporting roof structure to shed rainwater.

The slates work as part of a system with battens or sarking, fixings, ridges, flashings and rainwater details. A slipped slate can admit water, but the extent and cause of a roof problem need proper inspection.

Traditional slate roofs are common across Edinburgh tenements and townhouses. Roof access, shared ownership and the condition of adjacent chimneys, valleys and gutters can shape a repair project.

When repairing an older roof, matching the existing slate size, laying pattern and detailing can preserve its appearance. Scots slate is a specific Scottish material traditionally used on many roofs; not every slate roof uses it.
