Solid Wall

A solid wall is a wall built without a designed cavity between inner and outer leaves, commonly using stone or brick masonry.

Many older Edinburgh buildings have thick solid masonry external walls. They manage rain and moisture differently from modern cavity walls, and thickness or a dry-looking inner surface does not reveal every construction detail.

Before adding insulation, plasterboard or a dense finish, investigate the wall material, pointing, external condition and any signs of water entry. Trapping moisture within traditional masonry can damage finishes and adjacent timber.

Solid wall describes a construction type, not whether a particular wall carries structural loads. Internal walls can also be solid, so any proposed opening needs its own assessment.
