Stained Glass

Stained glass is coloured, painted or textured glass arranged to form a decorative glazed panel, often held together by lead cames.

Stained glass can be found in entrance doors, fanlights, internal screens and windows. Some panels use coloured pieces set in lead; others include painted details, textured glass or a mixture of techniques.

Edinburgh tenements and Victorian houses sometimes retain decorative glazing in shared closes and private entrances. These panels admit light while giving a doorway or stair a distinct character. Their value often lies in the original design, glazing and surrounding joinery together.

A loose or cracked panel should be assessed before a door is adjusted or a frame is replaced. Repair may involve conserving individual pieces and the leadwork rather than replacing the whole panel with a reproduction.
