Subsidence

Subsidence is the downward movement of ground beneath a building that can cause the structure above to move and crack.

Subsidence can arise when the supporting ground changes or loses strength. Cracks, sticking doors and uneven floors can be signs of movement, but none proves subsidence on its own.

An Edinburgh property may also show long-standing settlement, moisture-related movement, altered foundations or repairs from previous decades. The cause and whether movement is continuing need assessment rather than a diagnosis from a photograph.

If new or worsening movement is suspected, seek appropriate professional investigation before planning cosmetic repairs or major alterations. The findings may affect the scope of structural design and repair.
