Timber Shutters

Timber shutters are hinged wooden panels fitted to a window reveal or frame to provide privacy and control light.

Traditional timber shutters can fold back into the window reveal when open and close across the glass when needed. Their panels, hinges and surrounding joinery may form a carefully made part of the room.

Shutters survive in some Edinburgh Georgian and Victorian interiors, especially at tall sash windows. They can provide privacy without covering the window permanently, but old shutters may stick after years of paint build-up or changes to the frame.

Before replacing a damaged set, check whether hinges, panels or the housing can be repaired. A new installation should allow the window and shutters to operate freely and should suit the proportions of the opening.
