Under-Pavement Cellar

An under-pavement cellar is a small basement-level storage space extending beneath a pavement or external area, found alongside some historic Edinburgh townhouses and basement properties.

Under-pavement cellars are a feature of some historic Edinburgh properties, particularly Georgian townhouses and basement-level homes in areas such as the New Town. They form part of the below-ground accommodation and service spaces associated with larger period buildings, with cellar spaces sometimes extending beneath external entrance areas or pavements.

Traditionally used for storage and household purposes, these spaces are often constructed from stone or masonry and can have very different environmental conditions from the main accommodation above.

Moisture, ventilation and the condition of the surrounding masonry are particularly important when assessing an old cellar. Converting or upgrading a cellar for a different use requires careful consideration of its existing construction, waterproofing, ventilation, drainage, headroom and any permissions or building standards requirements relevant to the proposed work.
