Roofing

Verge

The verge is the sloping edge of a pitched roof at a gable, where the roof covering ends above the gable wall.

A verge closes the roof edge and helps protect the junction between the covering and the gable. Its finish varies with the roof material and the design of the building.

On an Edinburgh slate roof, a damaged edge can admit wind-driven rain or leave slates vulnerable to lifting. The roof covering, edge fixings and masonry below should be inspected together.

Verge refers to the sloping gable edge. Eaves are at the lower edge of the roof, normally where rainwater is collected by a gutter.
