Wall Panelling

Wall panelling is a system of timber, sheet material or mouldings used to cover or divide sections of an interior wall.

Wall panelling can be full height, arranged below a dado rail or formed as framed panels across a feature wall. Some installations use solid timber or boards; others use applied mouldings to create the appearance of panels.

In an Edinburgh period room, original panelling is part of the building’s joinery and deserves careful assessment before changes are made. Newly installed panelling can also work well when its proportions follow the doors, windows, skirtings and ceiling height.

The wall behind matters. Covering a damp or damaged wall can conceal a problem, so any moisture or loose plaster should be addressed before finishing. Detail at sockets, radiators and corners determines whether the result feels integrated with the room.
