Window Sill

A window sill is the horizontal surface at the base of a window opening, with exterior and interior sills serving different purposes.

An external sill projects and sheds rainwater away from the wall beneath the window. An internal sill finishes the bottom of the opening inside the room and may be made from timber, stone or another material.

Edinburgh stone façades often have substantial exterior sills whose condition affects how water moves around the window. Damage, failed joints or an altered drip detail can contribute to damp beneath an opening.

When repairing or replacing a sill, identify which element is being discussed and inspect the surrounding frame, reveal and masonry. Covering a water-entry route with an internal trim will not solve the external defect.
