Windows doors

Bay Window

A bay window is a window arrangement that projects outward from the main line of a building, creating an angled or curved space inside.

A bay may contain several window sections and has its own roof, support and weathering details. It adds light and floor area but introduces more junctions than a flat window opening.

Bay windows are familiar features of many Edinburgh Victorian houses and tenements. Their internal shape can accommodate a window seat, while the exterior stonework and roof details need ongoing maintenance.

When damp, cracking or draughts appear around a bay, assess the glazing, roof, stonework and structural support together. Replacing a pane alone may not resolve a defect at the bay’s junction with the building.
