Butterfly Roof

A butterfly roof has two roof planes that slope inward toward a central valley rather than outward from a central ridge.

The profile resembles an inverted pitched roof. Rainwater concentrates at the internal valley, making the lining, outlets and overflow strategy particularly important.

A butterfly roof may be proposed for a contemporary Edinburgh extension or encountered on a later building. Its distinctive shape can admit light or suit a design concept, but the roof structure and drainage need to work together.

When investigating a leak, inspect the full central valley and the route to the outlet. Water entering at one point may appear inside some distance away.
