Condensation

Condensation is water forming when moist air meets a surface cold enough for water vapour to turn into liquid.

Condensation commonly shows on cold windows and can also affect walls, corners and spaces with limited airflow. It depends on indoor moisture, surface temperature, heating and ventilation together.

An Edinburgh flat may develop mould around a cold external wall, behind furniture or near a thermal bridge. Yet a damp patch in the same location can also have a leak or rainwater cause, so the pattern and timing need checking.

Reducing indoor moisture and improving suitable ventilation and warmth may help surface condensation. If changes to insulation or windows are planned in a traditional building, consider how they could alter drying and create moisture elsewhere.
