Double Glazing

Double glazing uses two panes of glass separated by a sealed space within a glazing unit to reduce heat transfer compared with a single pane.

The sealed unit is fitted within a suitable window frame. Performance depends on the glazing specification, frame, seals and installation, not simply on having two panes.

In Edinburgh period properties, proposals to replace historic glazing or entire sash windows should consider the condition and significance of the original joinery. Repair, draught reduction or secondary glazing may be relevant options depending on the building and the desired outcome.

A failed sealed unit can mist between its panes. Surface condensation on the room side is a different issue and may relate to indoor moisture, temperature and ventilation.
