External Door

An external door is a door between the inside of a building and the outdoors, designed as part of the entrance’s security and weather protection.

An external door assembly includes more than the visible leaf: the frame, threshold, seals, glazing and ironmongery determine how the entrance operates.

In Edinburgh period properties, an original front door can be an important part of the building’s appearance. Draughts or sticking may be addressed through repair and adjustment, depending on the condition of the door and frame.

A new external door should be specified for its location and exposure, with proper drainage and a secure fit. Changes to a main door in a listed building or conservation area call for the relevant checks before replacement.
