Flashing

Flashing is a weatherproof layer or shaped material installed where a roof meets a wall, chimney, roof window or other interruption.

A flashing directs water over the roof covering and away from vulnerable junctions. It can be made from lead or another suitable material, with the design depending on the roof and adjoining construction.

On an Edinburgh slate roof, defective flashing at a chimney or parapet can cause a leak even while the surrounding slates remain sound. Water may travel within the roof before appearing on a ceiling.

A repair should identify the failed junction and its fixing or overlap. Lead flashing is a specific type; flashing is the wider term for the weathering detail.
